Can somebody identify this lizard for me? Debra has books on Texas bugs and snakes, but nothing on amphibians and other reptiles. I didn’t see anything that even remotely resembles this thing in any of the sites that matched my search for Texas lizards or amphibians.
I know the picture isn’t terribly good, but it was about midnight when I snapped this picture on my porch. The small sized picture actually looks better than the full image, but if you’re interested go ahead and click on the image at left for a larger view.
[Update 6/17: Reader consensus is that this is probably a juvenile Mediterranean Gecko. Thanks to all who responded. Somebody also suggested that I give an estimate of the lizard’s size. At the bottom left of the picture is the edge of a 2×4 stud. That edge is 1.5″ wide, and it looks like the lizard is about three times that length. So figure between 5.5 and 7 inches from nose to tail.]
I’m a little disappointed that my camera wasn’t able to get a better picture than this. The picture at left is the first one I took, using the camera’s normal snapshot setting. I tried several of the night mode settings, but every one turned out somewhat blurred, probably because I wasn’t able to keep the camera steady enough. Slower shutter speeds require a more steady hand.
