Roy, I do remember those LPs that contained different natural and man-made sound effects. I also recall that sound effect CDs seemed very popular in the early 90s when sound cards were first on the market. It is odd that there aren't more categories for sounds. "Ambient" and "Noise" is about it.

Brook, thanks for the info. Since I like to stay away from anything disco related, I probably won't be listening to any Trance, but it's good to know where things go.

"Trance" is a peculiar form of dance music consisting of mostly percussion and bass, with very little actual melody. What melody there is runs maybe 8 phrases at most, and is repeated endlessly throughout the performance. On the "music tree" it would be somewhere along the same branch as Eurodance, Techno-Industrial, Techno, Euro-House and Euro-Techno; that branch would be anchored on Disco. See http://www.eurodancehits.com/dict.html#TR

What I find really funny is that the first time I encountered this long version of the list of categories the tracks I was converting fit NONE of the categories AT ALL. They were recordings of bird songs meant to be references for bird watchers. Besides that there are no entries for the sounds of nature, there is another gap. Remember all those LPs that used to be available with train and other non-musical man-made sounds?
